In the Egyptien cosmogony, Nut personifies the sky : her laugh is the thunder, her tears the rain. Her body symbolizes the heavely vault and separates the earth from the flood which surrounded it. According to the traditions, Nut's body deployed above the earth to protect it.

Moreover she is thought of as mother of all stars. People belived the Sun disappeared in the evening in her mouth to travel during the night in her body and in the morning in her bosom, at east. During an eternal cycle, stars also crossed over her body during the day.
